Summary Abstract:This Thesis was submitted to the Univ. of Reading for an MSc. Degree in Pedology and Soil Survey. The study was based on the fact that current methods for determining AWC utilise tedious and laborious field determinations and/or laboratory techniques which give values that most of the time are poorly correlated with field determinations. In this study a method of determining AWC using field techniques, mainly finger texturing of soil horizons and estimation of content of stones and concretions, was tested and found to give reliable results.103 sites were analysed to 60 cm depth and information was recorded for % of coarse and fine sand, silt, clay, stones and concretions; and the AWC was determined for each of the soils horizons.3 maps, at 1:10,000 scale, accompany the study; these are: Map 1 Distribution of AWC, Map 2 Soil Drainage Classes, and Map3 Location of Textural Cross Sectional Diagrams.
